Smyth’s is an award-winning, family-run retail business located in the centre of Enniscorthy town, at the foothill of the famous Vinegar Hill, and directly positioned along the pathway of Ireland’s Ancient East, where visitors can view Enniscorthy’s historical Pugin’s Cathedral and the Norman Castle.

Steeped in history, where the Battle of Vinegar Hill took place in 1798, it is said that the rebels held a meeting in the upstairs front room of the original building back then, this room is now home to our ‘Cookshop’ where we hold sugarcraft classes for adults and children on an ongoing basis.

Our shop started out as a small 1,000 sq ft store with the main entrance from Rafter Street, named after Séamus Rafter who famously launched the Gaelic League in Enniscorthy, and fought in the 1916 Rising.

The shop grew incrementally over the years and it is now some 16,000 sq ft stretching back to the Lymington Road car park and adjoining Wafer Street on the other side.

Jack and Anna Kavanagh purchased the property from the Smyth family in 1979 and it was then known as ‘Peter Smyths’. Whilst our name has changed down through the years, it is still known by many as ‘Peter Smyths’ and that name is still proudly displayed on the Rafter Street entrance, in keeping with the traditional facade of the store.

The store was run by Jack and Anna with the help of their eight children for the next 20 years, and in 1990 their son Dermot and his wife Betty took over the shop and are running it to this day. The shop saw an expansion of 5,000 sq ft in 2018.

Our Mission

“We strive to provide our loyal customers with a service which is befitting of a store steeped in history and which has survived through thick and thin over the past 40 years.”

“We strive to bring a complete package to our customers in an environment which makes our customers feel at home and at ease. We pride ourselves on our staff. They offer an extensive product knowledge and a caring attitude towards our customers and above all else we endeavour to provide a service quality which is second to none.”

“Our promise is to keep our product range growing and changing in line with customers’ expectations and we make every effort to provide as wide a product range as possible to satisfy our customers. Providing value for money is an essential part of our ethos and being part of the ‘Homevalue’ group ensures we can buy competitively and so pass on value to our customers.”

“We are proud to say that our business has gone from strength to strength in the past 40 years and are happy in the knowledge that dedication and hard work has made Smyth’s Homevalue the success it is today.”

“We look forward to serving the people of Enniscorthy and beyond for many more years to come.”
